FreshDirect is Lying About How it Treats its Workers

FreshDirect says that it offers competitive wages and benefits.

FACT: Warehouse workers at FreshDirect earn $4 to $6 less an hour than the average New York area warehouse worker. The cost of family health insurance at FreshDirect is so high that it would take the average employee more than two weeks of pay to pay for their share of the premium.

FreshDirect says it provides safe and fair working conditions for its employees.

FACT: Workers at FreshDirect work 12-hour shifts, but the industry standard is 8 hours. Workers also work long shifts on fewer days a week so that the company doesn’t have to pay overtime. Employees work in wet, cold temperatures, but very few are issued appropriate gear.

FreshDirect says it is not standing in the way of a union.

FACT: FreshDirect has done everything it can to stop a union at its warehouse. FreshDirect has sent home anti-union flyers with its workers and openly discouraged employees to join a union in the workplace. It has also hired an infamous union-busting law firm to prevent a union from forming at FreshDirect. The company has even fired two of its employees for openly organizing their co-workers.
